Detailed description of TPC Harding Park Golf Course, Harding

Harding Park Golf Course -Harding, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in San Francisco, California.

The Harding Park was opened on July 18, 1925. The course was named for U.S. President Warren G. Harding, an avid golfer, who died while visiting San Francisco two years earlier. This 163-acre par-72 course was designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting. Sam was the owner of the nearby golf course Olympic Club. Their design fee was $300.

Between 1959 and 1961, the course was rerouted a bit, to accommodate the Fleming Nine and then, in 2004, the layout was again remodeled, this time by PGA Tour architect Chris Gray. The result is a stunning revitalization of a true classic.  The course takes advantage of the property's existing topography, contours, and vegetation. The predominant features include the towering Monterey Cypress trees and the nearby presence of Lake Merced.

Over the years, the courses' strategy and character have been substantially enhanced with the inclusion of several carefully placed bunkers and re-contoured green complexes. The addition of multiple teeing surfaces provides the course the flexibility to offer distinct playing characteristics that will challenge every golfer, from beginner to the most skilled player.

The Harding Park complex also includes an outstanding executive nine-hole course known as the Fleming Golf Course. The Fleming nine has been revitalized to the same discerning standards and conditioning as Harding's re-creation, albeit shorter in length yet full of strategy and interest. Fleming plays to a par of 30, with a total yardage for the nine holes ranging from 1865 yards from the forward tees to 2165 yards from the regular tees. The three par fours and six par threes are an excellent alternative to Harding's championship layout, providing a comfortable setting for the beginning or learning golfer.

Harding Park -Harding course plays to a maximum distance of 6,845 yards.

Blue tees: par-72, 6,845 yards, course rating 72.8, slope rating 126.

White tees: par-72, 6,405 yards, course rating 70.6, slope rating 123.

Red tees(M): par-73, 5,875 yards, course rating 68.0, slope rating 120.

Red tees(W): par-73, 5,875 yards, course rating 73.2, slope rating 123.

Gold tees(W): par-73, 5,375 yards, course rating 70.4, slope rating 116.

Great course - played twice in the last two weeks. It is getting ready for the PGA tournament in May 2020 so they are narrowing the fairways and thickening the rough. Course is tough but in great shape and hitting fairways in key. Great layout and ambiance with helpful staff and good bar/restaurant post round. SF Resident Senior walking rate of $47 is excellent value.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

A terrific, enjoyable round of golf. More expensive than it should be. Great if you are a SF resident. A "have to play at least once" course.

This is my home course. I never seem to get tired of it. Since the PGA Tour has taken over the management, the course conditions seem to have gradually improved and now is in the best condition in some time. Ticy residents get a break on green fees, but out of towners are required to pay top dollor.

Beautiful course with pine trees. Still has a muni feel even with the improvements. Not worth driving 90 miles for $100 non-resident Northern California fee. We have better courses for less money in our area.

The course has an excellent layout in a picturesque setting. The course is also in really good shape. The only drawback is the price. $100 to play this course is a little steep.

Great track, back nine some of the prettiest holes in the area. I may be biased because I grew up playing here when it was a "cow pasture". Since the PGA has come here the prices have gone up dramatically. If I could afford it I'd play here three times a week! Greens are quick and true but not crazy fast. Very fair golf course that the average player will enjoy. Definitely worth the trip out to Harding.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles

A nice layout, but not classic, they over charge non-residents because they can, based on recent Pro events. It is one of those that you want to play because of the coverage of events. But; it is not worth the effort, you can play better courses for far less. One oddity is that they never allow carts off the cart path, yet the layout does not support this adventure. The non-resident over charge includes a cart, but walking is how you should play this course. I will not be back! If I lived in Northern California, I would play again but non-resident fee is abusive.

Bottom line: Better courses for less nearby

I am a senior city resident and get a discount with my golf card purchased from the city every two years($90).Since the TPC took over the condition of the course has steadily improved. The greens have never been in better shape and the fairways have also improved. I have played the Lake Course at the Olympic numerous times and would have to say the "0" is after all a Private Country Club and can't be compared to a Public Course considering the fees charged at a Private Club;however Harding is getting there and still is a great Track I grew up on I will continue to play it often.

It is in the process of getting ready for the Prez Cup, but I was not that impressed. For a venue getting national attention, I did not think that the layout was that spectacular. The back nine was more visually attractive than the front and the 9 hole course in the middle was kind of a distraction.

I've played Harding several times and I've always enjoyed it. Being a junior resident, the deal ($15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends) is defenitely the best I've ever had and very well could be the best I will ever have. To play a PGA tour course for less than any other 18-hole public course in the city spoils me so much. Olympic Club (and probably San Francisco Golf Club, although I've never played there) is a little better than Harding but not by much.

I am a senior resident with disabled card and play for a cheap price. It is too bad the city thinks this is a "resort" golf course. They should allow carts on the fairways - especially disabled at all times. After millions of dollars spent of taxpayers money, the city still does not know how to maintain the course. They only have "gardeners - those from city parks" taking care of the course and have not taught them how to be greenskeepers. Also, there seems to be too much standing water on the course even after a slight rain. There are no "facilities" on the course as well as no drinking water. The city wants you to pay $1.25 for bottled water! What a "ripoff"!

The City recently rebuilt the entire course. Some things were a fantastic improvement, some others turned into a disaster. For instance, there is no plumbing throughout the entire course. Toilets are Port-a-pottys. There is no drinking water on the course. Benches, spike cleaners, and some ball washers are few and far between. The course can be beautiful. And challanging. They held the 2005 American Express tournament there and the low score was 5 or 6 under par. (Woods d.Daly playoff) The green fees are expensive because the city of San Francisco has no idea on how to run a golf course, and only considers the bottom line. Harding is a cart path only course, and it doesn't need to be. It is, after all, a muni. But they treat it like a resort. A resort with no on course toilets. Fees for non- residents are around $85 -$110 to walk. Residents pay $45, and resident seniors over 65 pay $31

My home course. completely renovated four years ago. Great layout, weather. A great muni course, but management treats it like a country club. They raised prices so much it is no longer affordable for many. They botched the drainage and grass on fairways. They keep the rough almost at competition levels . Too few benches for walkers, mororized carts are restricted to cart path only, no bathroom facilities or drinking water on course. But all things considered, it's a great course. You'd really have to see it in person.
